AN East End housing organisation has become the sixth to attempt a breakaway from Glasgow Housing Association.

Provanhall Housing Association is balloting tenants for approval to take direct control of their homes.

Under the plan - known as second stage transfer - 195 homes would transfer into Provanhall's ownership from the GHA.

If tenants in Auchinlea Road, Conisborough Road, Duffus Street, Whitslade Street and Balcurvie Road vote yes, they are being promised guarantees to limit rent rises and provide a better repairs service.

Tenants will also retain a right to buy their home.

Tenant John Percy, 88, has lived in Provanhall for more than 50 years and said: "Lots of people have said they'll vote yes but I hope they remember to put their ballot paper in the post because the association has been working hard to keep things local for us.

"It's much better for people like me when we know those looking after us and our homes.

"It helps to create a better environment and a great community spirit."

Patricia Gallagher, director of Provanhall Housing Association, said: "At the moment two different contractors cut the grass on opposite sides of the same street - we want one community whose housing association is locally accountable.

"Work on our £200,000 community centre has begun and there's a buzz that we hope will continue ahead of the ballot from March 30 to April 20."
